Marathon Aqua Ranch (MARS) is an educational aquaculture facility specializing in the growth of Cobia. Farm raised Cobia grow over 10 pounds a year. One of our current research projects is to be able to increase their growth rate by at least an additional 5 pounds a year. With the rate at which the human population is growing, we believe this will help produce enough food to handle the growth without depleting our environment. People always ask us if you can eat Cobia and if so what do they taste like? Cobia are such a prized fish that when the professional fishermen catch one in the wild, they will only bring it home to their families as a special treat. Cobia is a dense white fish with a light flavor and is perfect for grilling.
Our Fish
In addition to farm raised Cobia, we also lease an acre of ocean space from the government and have 1/2 million pounds of live rock spread throughout that acre. What would be the purpose you ask? Another area of interest for the Marathon Aqua Ranch is to help grow polyps, peppermint shrimp, and other types of soft corals. Saltwater aquarium owners comonly purchase peppermint shrimp from fish stores. They are used to keep the tanks clean. They only problem is where the peppermint shrimp are coming from. As it stands right now, they are removed from the ocean. While they are not endangered or low in populations, this method still requires the use of fuels and there is risk to hurting our reefs and marine life.
